SPOT Propelling the Education Sector – Helping Students to Navigate Code

Toborlife AI February 10, 2025

Boston Dynamics, a global giant that develops mobile robots, owns SPOT. This robot dog enables students to learn to code intuitively. The Computer Science Professor, Daisy Tang, of Cal Poly Pomona, supervised this robot purchase, funded by a US Air Force grant.

SPOT, the robot for research is used in educational settings to give students practical coding experience. They can control the robot dog’s actions, movements, and responses, helping students learn the ideas of navigation, data interpretation, and obstacle avoidance through real-world applications of coding languages like C++ and Python on a robotic platform.

SPOT Aiding in Interactive Learning

The Computer Science Majors of Cal Poly Pomona engaged in interactive tasks like building their calculator and building their own website.  Seeing their code working efficiently on SPOT gives students a hands-on learning experience. The students were able to implement additional hardware for SPOT and prepare it to perform activities like delivering groceries, playing catch, and recycling Pepsi cans in and around the college campus.

Robot Dog Platforms Used in Education and Research
  • Boston Dynamic’s Spot – A leader in the robot dog platform that is equipped with advanced capabilities and a strong development environment.
  • Petoi Bittle – A programmable and open-source robot dog, an awesome introduction to robotics that offers a balance between accessibility for beginners and accessibility for beginners
  • MechDog – A robot dog designed for educational purposes, supporting different programming languages like Python, Scratch, and Arduino.

How Robot Dogs Contribute to the Education Industry
  • Navigating Obstacle Course – The robot dog can be programmed to navigate a path with obstacles. The code is specifically for course planning and detecting the obstacle.
  • Recognizing objects – They can program the robot dog to identify and interact with objects.
  • Autonomous Exploration – The students can code to instruct the robot to independently explore an environment using sensor data to move without collisions.
  • Interactive explanations – Robots can showcase multifaceted robotic perceptions to a wider audience by offering engaging learning.

Students coding SPOT for voice commands

SPOT is a mobile robot with a fixed articulate arm that helps to manipulate real objects. SPOT is about to emerge as a robot without a controller, one who understands voice commands. “The aim of SPOT understanding voice commands is because we eventually want to evolve the project into assisting people with disability and mobility issues,” said Gabriel Siguenza, a graduate student.

Robots are becoming an everyday companion for students.

Robot Dogs are helping students and researchers study robotics, computer science, AI, coding, and other high-technology fields. The presence of a robot for research on campus can inspire, excite, or familiarize students and lead them toward success. Eventually, robot dogs that serve as guides, personal assistants, surveyors, etc., will be as routine as having a smartphone in their pocket.
