Built for the Harshest Environments

The robot—about the size of a small fridge—features a probe called a cryobot. It melts through ice using heat and drills deep to collect samples. Think of it like a high-tech straw, sipping from ancient frozen oceans where alien microbes might live.

Testing it on Earth’s glacier, which mimics the tough ice found on Europa, was key. Scientists had to make sure it wouldn’t crack, stall, or freeze up. The good news? It worked. And even better—it worked without needing a constant babysitter.

From Europa to Enceladus

The original target for this robot was Jupiter’s moon Europa, which has long fascinated scientists because of its salty underground ocean. But now, NASA is eyeing Saturn’s moon Enceladus instead.

Enceladus has shown off its liquid water in a more dramatic way—through geysers shooting ice into space. That means scientists may not even need to dig as deep. Still, NASA wants a robot that can drill, just in case.
